Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: Which One Should You Actually Use?
In my use, Claude Code covers about 90% of what Cowork does. Here's when to use each one, built from running both in real work.

TL;DR
Claude Code is the terminal agent that works directly on your machine. Cowork is for knowledge work in an isolated environment. In my use, Code covers about 90% of what Cowork does. Pick Code for development work and infrastructure. Pick Cowork for Dispatch (phone to desktop) or isolated document jobs.
The Question Everyone Asks
I get asked this weekly. Someone sees both Claude Code and Claude Cowork in their account and wants to know which one they should actually be using. The official docs explain what each one does, but they never answer the operator question: which one earns its place in your stack?
I run nearly all of my work through Claude Code. The business systems, the automation, the client work, the content pipeline. I tried Cowork. I last used it in June 2026.
Here is the decision framework I use, built from running both in real work.
What Is Claude Code?
Claude Code is the terminal agent. It runs on your PC directly, sees your entire file system, uses your shell, hits your VPS over SSH, deploys to Vercel, writes code, commits to git, and orchestrates subagents.
It works on the machine you are typing on right now. Any folder, any tool you already have installed, any MCP server you point at it. When you run claude in your terminal, you get Claude Code.
The critical detail: it runs in your environment, not a sandbox. When you tell it to deploy something, it deploys from your laptop with your credentials and your SSH keys. When you tell it to read a file, it reads the real file on disk.
Every automation I have built (16 services, 40+ workflows, 22 cron jobs) runs through Claude Code because for me it is the surface that touches real infrastructure. Skills, hooks, project configuration files, MCP servers, background sessions, cloud routines, everything in the C:\Dev workspace. That entire system is Claude Code, not Cowork.
Where it lives: Terminal CLI on Windows, macOS, Linux. Also the Claude Desktop app, VS Code, JetBrains and the web at claude.ai/code.
What it needs: A Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. It is not available on the Free tier.
What Is Claude Cowork?
Cowork is for knowledge work. Documents, spreadsheets, decks, file tidying, research. Anthropic describes it as running in an isolated environment. In my setup it only saw the folders I shared with it.
Think of it as Claude running in a controlled environment rather than directly on your machine. You point it at a folder, and it works on those files without touching anything else. The interface is point-and-click, closer to the Claude chat experience than the terminal.
It also has Dispatch, which is the feature that makes Cowork distinct: message it from your phone, and it works on your desktop while the PC is on. You get the finished work back as a notification. Anthropic's own page says Dispatch can hand development tasks to Claude Code too. Remote Control is a different thing, covered below.
Cowork also connects to plugins. Anthropic's help center says it runs on the desktop app, on claude.ai in the browser, and on the Claude mobile app. Its pricing page says Cowork is "rolling out to Pro and Max, with more plans to follow," so what you see depends on your plan and account.
Where it lives: Claude Desktop app on Windows and macOS. Also claude.ai (web) and the Claude mobile app, depending on your plan.
What it needs: A paid plan. Anthropic's help center lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and the pricing page says it is rolling out to Pro and Max with more plans to follow. Not on Free. Dispatch is in limited beta for some Pro and Max plans only.
The Real Difference: What Each One Actually Covers
Here is my judgment, and it is mine, not a published number. In my use, Claude Code covers about 90% of what Cowork does, given the right setup. Cowork covers about 40% of what Claude Code does.
What Code covers that Cowork does:
- Documents, spreadsheets, presentations through skills (I have pptx, docx, xlsx skills installed)
- Browsing through Playwright
- File management across the whole system
- Connectors through MCP servers
- Research, writing, planning
What Code does that Cowork cannot:
- Real shell access (PowerShell, Bash, SSH to a VPS)
- Git pushes and deploys from your machine
- Running commands with your actual credentials and environment variables
- Hooks that intercept and redirect Claude's actions
- Skills that carry between sessions
- Project configuration that applies automatically (CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, settings files)
- Background sessions that run while you are not watching
What Cowork does that Code does not:
- Dispatch started here: phone to desktop with the PC online and the app open
- Click-and-go interface for users who do not want a terminal
- An isolated environment for files you would rather keep apart from the rest of the system
The overlap is high. If you already run Claude Code with a working setup, Cowork added little for me except Dispatch. If you do not code and you want a safer surface for general knowledge work, Cowork makes sense.
Which One Should You Use?
Use Claude Code if:
- You write code, deploy infrastructure, or run automation
- You need SSH, git, or shell access
- You use skills, hooks, or MCP servers that apply across projects
- You work in one main workspace and want persistent context (CLAUDE.md, project settings)
- You want background sessions that run tasks while you do something else
Use Cowork if:
- You want Dispatch (phone to desktop, PC stays on and online)
- You need a point-and-click interface rather than a terminal
- You work on files you would rather keep isolated from the rest of the system
- You do not need real infrastructure access or deployment tools
Use both if:
- You run Claude Code for development and infrastructure work, and you want Dispatch for quick jobs you send from your phone while the laptop sits at the office
For me, it is roughly Claude Code for 95% of what I do and Dispatch for the remaining 5% (checking something from the phone while I am at an event). I do not open Cowork for document work because Code already handles it through skills.
Remote Access: The Third Option
If you want to work on your laptop's Claude Code session from your phone, there is a third route: Remote Control.
Remote Control connects claude.ai/code or the Claude mobile app to a Claude Code session running on your machine. Start a task at your desk, then pick it up from your phone. The session stays local the entire time. Your filesystem, MCP servers, tools, and project config all stay available.
How it differs from Dispatch:
- Remote Control continues an existing Claude Code session. The session runs on your machine. You are steering it remotely.
- Dispatch messages Cowork from your phone and gets the result back when done. Anthropic says it routes development tasks to Claude Code and knowledge work to Cowork.
When to use Remote Control over Dispatch:
- You already have a long job running in Claude Code at the office, and you need to answer a question it asks while you are away
- You want access to your full Claude Code setup (skills, hooks, project config) from the phone
- You need to do real development work or infrastructure tasks remotely
When to use Dispatch over Remote Control:
- Quick jobs that do not need the full Claude Code environment
- One-off tasks like pulling a file or generating a report
Remote Control requires your PC to stay on and the claude process to keep running. Anthropic's docs say it reconnects automatically if your laptop sleeps or the network drops. It is available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and API keys are not supported. On Team and Enterprise an Owner has to enable it first.
FAQ
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. Anthropic's help center says Cowork is on paid plans only (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), while the pricing page says it is rolling out to Pro and Max. It is not available on the Free tier. I am not aware of a separate Cowork fee on those plans, but check your own account.
Can I use both Claude Code and Claude Cowork?
Yes. Both are on paid plans. Use Code for development and infrastructure work. Use Cowork for Dispatch or isolated document jobs.
Does Cowork work on Windows 11 Home?
Some write-ups and GitHub issues say Cowork needs Hyper-V, which means Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Anthropic's help center only asks for the latest Claude for Windows. I run Windows 11 Home, and the Cowork VM service ran in June 2026. Whether it is reliable long-term on Home is untested. Cowork on the web at claude.ai is another route.
What is Dispatch and do I have access to it?
Dispatch lets you message Claude from your phone and have it work on your desktop (with the PC on and the desktop app open). Anthropic's help center says it is in limited beta for some Pro and Max plans and is not open to new users. Both the desktop app and the mobile app need to be current.
Which one should I learn first?
If you write code or run infrastructure, start with Claude Code. It is the terminal agent, and in my use it does everything Cowork does plus development work. If you do not code and you want a point-and-click knowledge assistant, start with Cowork. For most operators, Code is the default and Cowork is the specialist tool for Dispatch.
