What separates a value prop that converts from one that gets ignored

Most value propositions fail at the first sentence because they describe the product instead of the outcome. "AI-powered pipeline management software" tells a prospect what the thing is. "Helps B2B sales teams close 30% more deals without adding headcount" tells them what changes for them. The second one earns the next sentence. The first one doesn't.

Specificity is the highest-leverage fix. Swapping a vague benefit for a concrete number — even an approximate one — makes the claim feel earned rather than assumed. "Saves time" is noise. "Saves six hours a week" is a promise someone can hold you to.

Jargon is the other silent killer. Words like "seamless", "robust", and "cutting-edge" appear in thousands of pitches and mean nothing. They signal a template, not a position. The test: if you swapped your company name for a competitor's and the sentence still made sense, it's not a value prop — it's filler.
